Stenosis means narrowing. In this case of the spinal canal containing the spinal cord and/or of the spinal foramina, the openings between the spinal vertebrae allowing the spinal nerves to exit from the spine. The pain from lumbar spinal stenosis is experienced as back, buttock or sciatic pain down the leg. Weakness, numbness and/or tingling may also be present. The most common reason for stenosis is osteoarthritis of the spine, whether from previous injury or fromdegeneration over the years.
Our expert practitioners use manual therapy of lumbar spinal stenosis, as developed by the World Expert in Spinal Stenosis, Dr. Carlo Ammendolia, DC, PhD., aiming to alleviate pain, enhance your function and daily quality of life. The treatment program combines spinal mobilization, resisted exercises and home rehabilitation exercises to increase blood circulation to the tissues (nerves, joints, muscles) of the back allowing you to regain walking distance, ability to stand for longer periods of time and your overall stamina.
Spinal stenosis can affect all areas of the spine, including the cervical spine (myelopathy). This condition may present as neck, shoulder or arm pain, or as low back and/or sciatic pain. We use clinical diagnostic skills, combined with MRI results when available, to differentially diagnose and treat accordingly.
